Who Is This Boaz Guy & What Is His Weird Ratings System?!

Boaz hangin' with the seals

Boaz is a movie freak with a capital F. He loves a good movie, enjoys most of the bad ones, and tries to see them all. His average number of movies seen in the theater per year? 150. You don’t need to get your eyes checked, you read that number correctly!
When he’s not dragging his  fiancée to the local theaters, he is a new graduate nurse and runs a social network in Los Angeles.

He asks you to recognize that half the time he writes this blog is at 2am when he should be in bed sleeping, so please allow for anything less than perfection!

What are the ratings breakdowns?

Quality Rating – How good the movie is. Basically, this is what you’re used to seeing in a typical movie review.

Boaz Rating – How much he enjoyed watching the movie. This could be because it was intentionally entertaining in spite of possibly very bad film-making  or it could be unintentional “how did this movie get made???” guilty pleasure fun.

For example, a movie like The Tree of Life may have been beautifully crafted and get an “A-” quality rating, but I’d give it an “F” Boaz Rating since I wanted to gouge my eyes out from boredom and wished I’d never seen it. On the flip-side Battlefield Earth was a God-awful movie with John Travolta showing off his holy Scientologist doctrine, and there was nothing good about it….except for the fact that I enjoyed every minute of how bad it was, and wasn’t bored for a second; so it probably gets a “D” quality rating but an “A” Boaz rating.

I’ll also compare the movie and sandwich it between two comparable movies. It might be other movies from the same director, the same actor, or the same genre.  It also may be pretty random. For example, The Tree of Life was worse than The Thin Red Line (also by Terrence Malick) but better than watching paint dry for 3 hours. Barely. And Battlefield Earth was worse than Face/Off by a landslide, but better than Swordfish (an awful Travolta movie only redeemed by Halle Berry nudity).

I love reading these reviews and have saddened that with a little one we don’t make it much to the movies anymore, but it will influence what we rent in 3-6 months later when they come out on DVD! However, I find the rating system really confusing…I think there should be just a single rating. The dual rating system is confusing because they technically are both your ratings….it is boaz’s opinion of the quality and boaz’s liking of it (which it the traditional rating that is done by other critics I think)…I think both should be taken into account and you should publsh a single rating taking both your opinion of the movie and how much you enjoyed it. For instance tree of life should get maybe a 1 because it wasn’t well made…If you, me, and the rest of the world outside of eliteists film snobs were bored then despite the great cinematography then the film should get a boaz rating of 0 or 1 based on the fact that you didn’t enjoy it and the rest of the world wouldn’t either. Then Battlefield Earth should get a 5 based on the fact that the movie was poorly made but you still enjoyed it so there is some value to the movie. Just my opinion, but love the reviews and keep them coming!

Thanks for such thoughtful feedback Craig!
I understand what you’re saying, but I wanted to utilize the fact that most critics give one rating, and I am basically a dichotomy of a movie buff. I both understand movies and can give critical analysis of them as well as any critic, but I also have very easy-going taste to enjoy myself, even in the worst of movies.
I’m trying therefore to make the distinction between when I enjoy it because it’s terrible but entertaining to watch, and the quality of it. I can’t give Battlefield Earth a 5 because it was awful, truly awful, and unintentionally, but it was fast paced and silly enough that it became entertaining. I simply need to give two ratings as a result. Hope that makes sense!

I think your rating system is original and makes a lot of sense. Bravo.

Thanks for checking out my blog, I was just looking yours over and I’m liking what I see. I like that you have a film quality rating AND a personal rating, cause those two things can (and often do) conflict. Looking forward to seeing more great stuff!

Oh yeah, they conflict OH so often! 🙂
Thank you for the high praise, I look forward to having you as a reader and hearing any feedback you ever care to give, it’s especially fun when you know it’s from a fellow movie-lover!
